Day 3--End of Week 1!

You made it through the first week. Good job! Only 15 more weeks to go! :-)

Today in class we began work in the Kanar text. We read the article "From Jedidiah to Jordan: What to Name the Baby" on pp 5-6. See below for your homework for Kanar.

We also talked about the first vocabulary quiz. It is tentatively scheduled for next Friday 1/25. You need to know the ten words from page 4 of Kanar. I suggest using index cards to study.

We did the first article sharing. Those of you who had articles and shared, good job. For those who did not have an article to share, be prepared next time. Due next class is a summary (75+ words) and reaction (50+ words) of the article. Even if you were absent or did not have an article to share today, you still can turn in the summary/reaction on Wednesday 1/23.

We also reviewed the assignment for Paragraph 1. For more details, see information on 1/16.

We continued work in Chap 4 of the Langan text on subjects and verbs. The quiz on this chapter will likely be next Friday, 1/25.

Homework for Wednesday 1/23
  • Paragraph 1, 1st draft. Be ready to share your draft with a small group of classmates. Also, remember to double-space your draft.
  • Article sharing 1, summary (75+ words) and reaction (50+ words)
  • Kanar--Answer questions on pp 6 thru 8.
  • Langan--Do review tests 1 and 2 on pp 97-98. If you were absent today (1/18 Fri), do all the practice exercises on pp 94-97 then check your answers with key in the back of the book. We covered all this stuff in class.

Day 2

We talked about the four goals of effective writing today which are
  1. Have a point and state that point in what is called a topic sentence.
  2. Support the point with details such as facts, reasons, and examples.
  3. Organize (put in a logical order) the supporting details.
  4. Write error-free sentences.
We discussed the first writing assignment--Paragraph 1. The topic of the assignment is one thing you did on Saturday 1/12 or Sunday 1/13. The first draft will be due on Wed 1/23 and it should be one paragraph of at least 150 words. Make sure to strive to achieve all four goals of effective writing in your paragraph. The first draft can be handwritten. If you type it, I will give you bonus points.

We also talked about Article sharing. Get an article sharing handout here.

We then did work in Langan on subjects and verbs.

Homework for Friday 1/18
  • Read a newspaper or magazine article, cut it out, and bring it to class. Be ready to share with the class the basic who/what/when/where/why of the article you chose.
  • Do Practice 1, 2, 3 on pages 91-93 in Langan. If you need help finding subjects and verbs, go here. Also, I suggest you take a look at this youtube video. It's funny and will help you understand subjects and verbs better.
